Why Small-Batch Incense Takes Time

At SSLK, we often receive inquiries from companies

and individuals about creating custom incense blends in small quantities.

While the final order may consist of only a few boxes,

the work involved in developing a new scent begins long before the incense takes shape.

Working with Natural Materials

Our incense is made from natural aromatic woods,

resins, roots and herbs.

These materials are usually sourced in larger batches,

rather than purchased in small amounts for individual orders.

We select them according to their scent, age, condition and overall quality.

Even materials of the same species and origin can vary considerably between batches.

Agarwood, for example, develops different aromatic characteristics depending

on its growing environment, resin formation, age and storage conditions.

Such variations require us to evaluate each batch rather

than rely solely on its name or place of origin.

The process of sourcing, examining and preparing materials remains much the same,

regardless of how many incense sticks we eventually produce.

Developing a Formula

Creating a new incense blend involves more than combining aromatic ingredients.

Each material has its own character,

and the proportions determine how these individual scents interact.

Even a small adjustment to one ingredient can noticeably

change the balance of the entire composition.

Selected materials are cleaned, ground and sifted before blending.

We then test different proportions, observing how the scent develops during burning.

Some adjustments are subtle.

Others require reconsidering the relationship between several ingredients.

The process continues until the composition achieves the character we are looking for.

Even when only a small quantity is required,

these stages of preparation and testing cannot simply be skipped.

Why Quantity Matters

The cost of developing a new incense formula

does not decrease in direct proportion to the number of incense sticks produced.

Sourcing materials, preparing ingredients,

testing formulations and making adjustments all require time

and resources before production can begin.

This is why we generally have a minimum order quantity for custom incense projects.

It is not simply a matter of encouraging larger orders.

It reflects the practical requirements of sourcing natural materials

and developing a complete incense formula.

Regardless of the final production quantity, selecting materials,

developing a formula and evaluating the scent all require the same essential process.
